What OT cybersecurity certifications should my team have?

Certifications can help OT teams build consistent knowledge, but they are not a substitute for practical industrial experience. The best OT cyber security capability combines cyber security knowledge, engineering understanding, safety awareness and familiarity with standards such as IEC 62443.
Useful certifications may include IEC 62443 related training, industrial cyber security courses, network security qualifications, incident response training, vendor-specific control system security training and general cyber security certifications for governance and risk management.
What matters most
For OT environments, teams need to understand how cyber controls affect physical processes. They should be able to discuss zones and conduits, secure remote access, asset inventory, patch constraints, backup recovery, change control, vulnerability management and incident response in operational terms.
A team member who understands industrial systems, maintenance practices and safety implications may be more valuable than someone with purely IT-focused credentials.
Building a balanced team
A strong OT cyber security team usually includes people from operations, engineering, IT, cyber security, safety, compliance and management. Not everyone needs the same certification. The goal is to create shared understanding and clear responsibilities.
